Students urged to unite for development

ZOMBA, Malawi— Students at the School of Law, Economic and Government at the University of Malawi were urged to develop a spirit of unity, tolerance and peace to foster development, writes Zonkey Kaziyenda.
"Sporting activities helps students to built issues of unity, team building, social interaction and team working sprit therefore these skills are very important when they graduate because community out there faces various challenges and those challenges cannot be solved by one person but it needs team working and collaboration," said Happy Kayuni, executive dean of the school, during the Executive Dean's Trophy prize presentation ceremony Sunday.
Kayuni said the school organized the trophy to bring students together to relax, share knowledge and be imbued with a spirit of togetherness to help them collaborate after their studies.
Engaging students in various sporting activities is "a very powerful weapon" because there is a link between sports and class performance as it helps them relax and develop leadership, social interaction and teamwork skills, he said.
Isaiah Mbolembole, chair of the Executive Dean's Committee, applauded the organizers, saying the trophy allowed students from different societies under the department to have free time, relax and share knowledge.
"Sports help student to refresh their brain and at the same time be health cited that a health person can easily be able to do well in academic and achieve its goals in life," said third-year law student William Luhanga.
