LILONGWE, Malawi — A group of students from Matenje Secondary School had the unique opportunity to witness the inner workings of the Malawian Parliament during an educational visit facilitated by Member of Parliament for Salima North-West Constituency, Enock Phale, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
The students, eager to learn about parliamentary proceedings, were treated to a day filled with enlightening talks, interactions with notable figures, and an observation of the parliamentary session.
The visit also included a tour of the parliamentary facilities and valuable time spent with members of parliament, journalists, and a special gathering with MP Phale.
Enock Phale expressed his motivation behind inviting the students, stating that it is one of the measures to encourage and motivate young minds in the constituency to engage with the legislative process.
He emphasized that this educational visit to Parliament would become an annual tradition.
While addressing the significance of the visit, Phale noted, "The trip gives students an invaluable view of the inner workings of the parliament and was something they were privileged to be a part of because it was among other important information that they needed to know to help them in the future to be responsible citizens."
Ester Dumbo, one of the students, shared her perspective on the experience, expressing how the visit was an eye-opener for many who were unaware of the roles and responsibilities of Parliament.
"We really prize the level of access we have here. It’s such an important opportunity for the students. Now that we have been educated about it, we are so thankful to have learned about Parliament at this very young age," she said.
Matenje Secondary School, situated in traditional authority Khombedza in Salima, aims to inspire its students through such educational initiatives, providing them with a broader understanding of the democratic process and encouraging a sense of civic responsibility.
