Students Boost Community Nutrition in Nkhata Bay District
Ten-week field practicum students presented and demonstrated as part of their Nutrition and Home Management studies.
NKHATA BAY, Malawi - Magomero College students recently conducted nutrition awareness and cooking demonstrations aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles in Nkhatabay district communities, writes Royal Kasiya.
"We want to empower residents with knowledge and skills to make informed dietary choices and establish healthier eating habits," said Innocent Vindundu, a Nutrition and Home Management student who helped organize the events.
The two-day sessions, held on November 30, were inspired by rising diet-related illness rates.
Senior Group Village Headman Bright Muhone said the events "showcase practical ways to incorporate healthy ingredients into everyday meal preparation" and have a "significant impact" by providing valuable nutrition information.
Participants learned about balanced meals, portion control, and the importance of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
Presentations emphasized how healthy foods prevent chronic disease and maintain wellness.
"Afterwards, we transformed nutritious ingredients into delicious meals during cooking demonstrations featuring creative, balanced recipes," Vindundu said.
The interactive sessions encouraged questions, experience sharing, and idea exchanges.
Feedback was "overwhelmingly positive," Vindundu reported, with many expressing enthusiasm for healthy eating and implementing lessons learned.
"I'm inspired to experiment with new ingredients and techniques, bring more home-cooked meals to my table, and involve my family in the cooking process," said participant Thokozire Liwomba.
The events, held at Chapumbwa village, attracted diverse participants from Mzizimanga, Kajawala, Kamphanga and other area villages eager to enhance nutrition and cooking skills.

"The cooking demonstrations were my favourite part. Now I can't wait to try healthier recipes at home," Liwomba said.
