NKHATA BAY, Malawi — Passengers bound for Likoma and Chizumulu islands are stranded in Nkhata Bay district after strong Mwera winds over Lake Malawi prevented the Lamani boat from departing Wednesday night, writes Rabecca Kaunda.
Hildah Phiri, a passenger, expressed concern about perishable goods.
"Since Wednesday, the goods are still packed, hoping to depart soon," she said.
Vendor Mustafa Kauka worried about financial losses.
"It's hard to stay in the same place for a long time doing nothing," Kauka said. "I fear I won't reach my planned target."
Lamani boat captain Golden Chinunda emphasized safety.
"We can't put passengers' lives at risk. We'll wait until the Mwera winds reduce speed over Lake Malawi," he said.
Alick Chibathowa, a meteorologist from the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, reported wind speeds of 35-45 km/h with 1-2 meter waves.
"The wind is still very strong, which would be too risky, especially for those sailing small boats," Chibathowa said.
He advised lake users to continue exercising safety measures, as the winds are expected to persist until June 29, 2024.
