Stray Buffaloes Cause Fear and Injuries in Nsanje District
Three stray buffaloes from Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve injure a person, causing fear among residents in Nsanje District.
NSANJE, MALAWI — One person has been injured as three stray buffaloes suspected to have fled from the Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve have been causing havoc in the area of Senior Chief Tengani in the Nsanje District, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
The victim, Mark Kachala, has been referred to the Nsanje District Hospital for treatment.
"People are living with great fears, especially at night," said Kachala.
The reserve manager for Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve, Brave Madise, confirmed receiving a report about the incident.
He stated that the attack took place in a garden around Nyamithuthu, where the victim sustained injuries to the left leg.
"I could not see the actual wound, but I only saw blood on her cloth," said Madise.
Madise dismissed claims that the buffaloes had escaped from the protected area, stating that the woman had entered the reserve where she encountered the animals.
"According to the injured woman, whom I met at the district hospital, she claimed to have run from Nyamithuthu to Misamvu. However, this seems unlikely considering the distance between the two points," he said.
Madise believes that a second victim may have sustained injuries while running away from the buffaloes.
In light of the incidents, Madise is appealing to the general public to refrain from entering the protected area to avoid such encounters.
"If you spot wildlife in your communities, please report it to the Mwabvi Wildlife Reserve office or the police," he advised.
