Standard Bank, Press Trust Commit K51.7M for Student Scholarships
LILONGWE, Malawi — Standard Bank Plc and Press Trust have allocated K51.7 million to support high-achieving primary school graduates through their secondary education, marking the second disbursement of a multi-year scholarship program, writes AfricaBrief Reporter.
The funding, presented Tuesday in Lilongwe, continues the Standard Bank-Press Trust Merit Scholarship Fund launched in 2020.
The initiative covers school fees, examination costs, and essential supplies for top-performing students across Malawi.
"Education is a critical ingredient for the development of our nation," said Tamanda Ng'ombe, Standard Bank's Head of Brand and Marketing.
The bank has pledged more than K200 million to support the current cohort of scholars through their secondary education.
The program aims to remove financial barriers for exceptional students.
Monica Banda, a Form 2 student at Lilongwe Girls Secondary School, said the scholarship allows her to "focus on my studies without the burden of financial stress."
Florida Banda, Director of Secondary Education, welcomed the private sector support, noting that "the Ministry of Education is facing numerous challenges that the government alone cannot address."
The scholarships will support the current group of students through 2027 when they sit for their Malawi School Certificate Examinations.
Recipients receive comprehensive support, including stationery, school shoes, and bags.
Press Trust Trustee Linda Phiri praised the partnership for helping "outstanding students fulfil their dreams" despite the economic challenges facing the country.
The program represents one of several educational initiatives by Standard Bank, which has identified education as a key pillar in its sustainability agenda.
