Standard Bank doubles marathon proceeds for children's cancer education
The sixth annual Be More Race was themed "Why We Run," connecting the sporting event with community service.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Standard Bank Plc has donated K36 million to the Children's Education Centre at Kamuzu Central Hospital's Cancer Center, doubling the funds raised from its annual Be More Race marathon, writes AfricaBrief Reporter.
The bank matched the 18 million kwacha collected from registration fees for the July 20 half-marathon, fulfilling its pledge to support childhood cancer education.
"Education at the cancer centre provides stability and hope for young patients," said Norah Nsanja, Head of Legal and Governance at Standard Bank, during a fundraising dinner for the Baylor Foundation Malawi National Cancer Center.
"We aim to ensure these children remain engaged in their studies during treatment."
Dr. Rezine Mzikamanda, Director of the Pediatric Cancer Department, emphasized the donation's impact.
"This contribution will create a nurturing environment for interactive learning and peer support," he told The Associated Press.
"It significantly improves the educational experience and emotional well-being of our patients."
The funds will support: — Refurbishment of the education centre — Purchase of specialized educational materials — Programs to maintain children's learning during treatment
"We successfully met our objectives," Mzikamanda said, noting the event's dual purpose of fundraising and awareness.
"We look forward to continued community engagement supporting children with cancer."
