The partnership represents a strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors, demonstrating a unified approach to sustainable development in Malawi.
LILONGWE, Malawi — Standard Bank has committed K11.5 million to support Malawi's newly developed National E-Waste Management Policy, targeting environmental sustainability and responsible electronic waste disposal, writes AfricaBrief Reporter.
The bank's donation will help launch a comprehensive policy to manage Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), aligning with national and international sustainable development goals.
Kondwani Mlilima, Standard Bank's Chief Risk Officer, emphasised the critical nature of the initiative. "Addressing the growing problem of e-waste is a vital part of our collective responsibility," Mlilima said.
The policy establishes a coordinated framework involving government institutions, private sectors, development partners, academia, and civil society.
It focuses on six key priority areas: institutional and legal frameworks, financing, infrastructure development, capacity building, awareness, research, and electronic equipment certification.
Richard Pelekamoyo, Principal Secretary for Administration at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change, welcomed the private sector's involvement.
"We are happy that the private sector can play a role in managing environmental issues," Pelekamoyo said.
With technology usage increasing globally, e-waste management has become increasingly critical.
Pelekamoyo noted that improper disposal of obsolete electronic devices poses significant environmental and health risks.
The partnership represents a strategic collaboration between the public and private sectors, demonstrating a unified approach to sustainable development in Malawi.
The new policy aims to provide standardised approaches to electronic waste management, addressing growing challenges in disposal and recycling while protecting environmental and human health.
