Standard Bank: Be More Race Supports Cancer-Stricken Children's Education
Standard Bank's initiative highlights the growing trend of corporate social responsibility in Malawi, using sports events to address critical health and education issues.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Standard Bank of Malawi says its "Be More Race" is more than just a competition, emphasizing its impact on the human spirit and community support, writes Pemphero Musowa.
Sunday's race, themed "Why We Run," rallied participants to support education needs of children battling cancer at Kamuzu Central Hospital.
Frank Chantanya, the bank's Head of Corporate and Investment Bank, said, "Today we ran to give our cancer-suffering children hope, joy, and most importantly a chance to live their lives to the fullest."
Chantanya added, "We believe that our success is deeply rooted in the prosperity of our community. Over the past six years, we have come together to run for a purpose."
Deputy Minister of Health Halima Daudi noted that 500 children are admitted for cancer treatment annually.
"This is a stark reminder of the urgent need for our collective support," Daudi said.
The sixth annual event, which began at Kumbali Lodge in 2017, saw a record-breaking 2,334 runners participate this year.
