Sports Sponsorships Urged to Curb Youth Crime in Malawi
Local leaders hope increased sports sponsorships will provide positive outlets for youth energy and reduce crime rates in the community.
BLANTYRE, Malawi — Companies and organizations are being called upon to sponsor sports activities in local communities as a way to reduce youth crime, writes Yohane Mvula.
Jurio Chimbuzi, event manager for Chilobwe United football club, made the appeal Sunday during an awareness and sensitization parade in Chilobwe, Blantyre.
"Our team requires sponsorship from all members of society, including businesses and companies, to continue performing well in the Southern Region Division One," Chimbuzi said.
"We ask well-wishers to register with us for membership as part of sponsoring us."
Chimbuzi emphasized that unemployment leads many youths to engage in criminal behavior.
He believes involving them in sports activities can help them become responsible citizens.
The parade aimed to raise awareness about the football club and mobilize resources for youth participation.
Group Village Chilobwe, who attended the parade, commended the club's management for the initiative to combat crime in the area and pledged his support for youth activities.
The event concluded with a music show at Naotcha Primary School ground, featuring performances by 72-year-old Granny Jetu and Zeze Kingston.
Local leaders hope increased sports sponsorships will provide positive outlets for youth energy and reduce crime rates in the community.
