Sporting activities help change youth behaviour in Zomba-Councillor Chitseko
Councillor Munira plans to introduce more bonanzas to reduce smoking, excessive drinking, and sexual activities among youth in Likangala Ward.
ZOMBA, MALAWI — Likangala Ward Councillor Munira Bakari Chitseko says that sporting activities like soccer are a crucial factor in changing the behaviour of youths in the ward in Zomba District, writes Peter Davieson.
Chitseko made the remarks on Sunday during the final match of the Councillor Munira Trophy between Chikanda Football Club and Mpondabwino Football Club.
The guest of honour was the Mayor of Zomba City, Davie Maunde.
"I am strongly satisfied with the turnout of spectators, which shows that people love soccer. As their councillor, I will continue to organise more bonanzas. These games will leave no space for young people to do bad things. Instead, they will be busy playing games and watching soccer," Chitseko said.
The Councillor Munira Trophy was a mixture of football and netball teams.
Soccer Saints were awarded the discipline team award, while Stanley Bokos of Chikanda Football Club was named the man of the match.
Sungana Charlie of the Soccer Saints was the top goal scorer.
The trophy went to Mpondabwino Football Club, which also received a cash prize and a football jersey.
Chitseko said she plans to continue organising bonanzas in the ward in order to keep young people busy and away from bad vices.
She said she wants to give the youth something tangible to play around with, instead of letting them engage in behaviours that endanger their lives.
The Councillor Munira Trophy is a positive example of how sporting activities can be used to change the behaviour of young people.
It is hoped that the bonanza will be a success and that it will help to create a more conducive environment for the development of the youth in the ward.
