South Africa's Ramaphosa to Sign Anti-GBV, Graft Laws
The anti-GBVF council will provide strategic leadership, while the prosecuting authority's directorate will be empowered to thoroughly investigate major graft cases.
PRETORIA, South Africa— President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Friday sign into law the National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Bill and National Prosecuting Authority Amendment Bill in a ceremony at the Union Buildings, writes Winston Mwale.
The National Council on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide Bill lays the foundation for a multi-sectoral approach to gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) in South Africa.
This landmark legislation establishes a council to drive a whole-of-society approach to combat this scourge.
The National Prosecuting Authority Amendment Bill amends the 1998 Act to provide for the establishment of the Investigating Directorate against Corruption.
The Directorate will prioritize investigations into serious, high-profile or complex corruption, commercial or financial crimes.
"The signing ceremony will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2024," said Vincent Magwenya, the president's spokesperson. Media wishing to cover the event must RSVP by noon on Thursday to Khutjo Sebata at Khutjo@presidency.gov.za.
The new laws mark a critical step in ensuring women's safety and security, and combating corruption in South Africa.
The anti-GBVF council will provide strategic leadership, while the prosecuting authority's directorate will be empowered to thoroughly investigate major graft cases.
