South African Government Pledges Ekurhuleni Upliftment
President Ramaphosa emphasized the administration's focus on job creation through partnerships with the private sector.
PRETORIA, South Africa— The South African government has vowed to improve living conditions and boost economic opportunities in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, following appeals from residents, writes Winston Mwale.
President Cyril Ramaphosa led a District Development Model Presidential Imbizo on Friday, engaging with residents and stakeholders at Tsakane Stadium in Brakpan.
"Enhancing cooperative governance and integrated delivery" was the theme of the event.
During the Imbizo, residents raised concerns about unemployment, lack of housing, agricultural funding, water shortages, and illegal businesses.
Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza assured residents the city's Water and Sanitation Department is working diligently to ensure reliable and sustainable municipal services.
The department has allocated R590 million for key projects, including a new 30Ml reservoir in Germiston, a new sewer pipeline at Pomona, and a new water pipeline in Nigel.
"We are working tirelessly to address the challenges our residents face," said Xhakaza.
To mitigate the impact of power cuts, the city has installed backup generators at 21 water supply infrastructure sites.
The City is also implementing a range of housing projects and related infrastructure, totaling just under half a billion rand in areas like Brakpan Old Location, Esselen Park, John Dube, and Helderwyk.
The government announced other initiatives, including the fast-tracking of land claims, the opening of a shared facility for small businesses, the revival of dormant industrial parks, and the provision of solar panels to needy residents.
President Ramaphosa emphasized the administration's focus on job creation through partnerships with the private sector.
"We are committed to addressing housing shortages and stepping up the fight against crime," he said.
He also called on public servants to deliver on the upliftment of the people of Ekurhuleni.
