SOS Children’s Villages Provides Emergency Relief to Cyclone Freddy Victims
The support reached 2,000 vulnerable children.
BLANTYRE, Malawi — SOS Children’s Villages has donated emergency relief items worth K50 million to 500 families affected by Cyclone Freddy in the Blantyre district, under the jurisdiction of Senior Chief Kunthembwe, writes Thokozani Beaton.
The distribution exercise, held at Senior Chief Kunthembwe’s headquarters on Tuesday, included food and non-food items such as grain maize, likuni phala, soya pieces, cooking oil, plastic sheets, and learning materials.
The support reached 2,000 vulnerable children.
Alexander Nguwo, Family Strengthening Programmes Coordinator for SOS Children’s Villages, emphasised the organization’s mission to offer love, support, and care to vulnerable children and families.
“In times of crisis, it is often the most vulnerable among us who bear the brunt of the suffering. Families, especially children, face unimaginable hardships, displacement, hunger, and loss. But it is also during these challenging times that the power of solidarity and community shines brightest,” said Nguwo.
Martha Maganizo, a beneficiary of SOS Children’s Villages’ emergency relief program and survivor of Cyclone Freddy, expressed her gratitude for the timely donation.
She revealed that her household was experiencing a shortage of food and other necessities which had affected her children’s education.
“My children at times were not attending school due to lack of food in the house,” she added.
Senior Chief Kunthembwe thanked SOS Children’s Villages for the donation of assorted items.
“This will help alleviate some of the problems facing people in the area,” he said.
The traditional leader noted that many households in his area are facing a hunger situation this year due to recent disasters.
