LILONGWE, Malawi — Solar energy company SolarOn is investing in solar-powered water pumps for irrigation in Mozambique and Malawi through a partnership with pump manufacturer Futurepump, writes Winston Mwale.
The India-designed pumps work with hosepipes, drip and mist irrigation systems and sprinklers. The surface water pumps draw from shallow wells, rivers, streams and lakes.
Futurepump backs the pumps with a 10-year warranty covering all parts and repairs at no charge.
“We firmly believe that if you’ve invested in a technology, you should be able to use it for years to come, through quality design and manufacturing, and simple servicing,” said Helen Yapp, Futurepump managing director.
SolarOn has reached nearly one million people across Southern Africa through solar lanterns, home systems and commercial installations.
The company now aims to support farmers seeking alternatives to petrol and diesel pumps.
The company offers various payment options for the irrigation technology.
