Solar Power Project to Enhance Learning in Malawi Schools
The implementation of the solar energy project is expected to significantly benefit rural schools, where access to electricity has long been a barrier to educational progress.
LILONGWE, Malawi- Edukans Foundation Malawi is launching a solar energy initiative aimed at improving education quality and student learning outcomes in primary schools across the country, writes Meclina Chirwa.
The one-year, 200,000 Euro project, titled "Harnessing the Sun for Improved Learning Outcomes and Sustainable Development," will target 10 rural Lilongwe schools, benefiting over 12,000 learners.
"The unavailability of electricity in most schools is a big challenge.
The coming in of this project will help harnessing and ensure that schools are provided with solar energy," said Edukans Foundation Malawi Team Leader Thomas Kanjodo.
Kanjodo emphasized that the lack of electricity has been a persistent obstacle, noting that the solar installations will allow students more study time.
The project aligns with Malawi's National Education Programme and supports the country's development goals, including Malawi 2063, MIP1, and NESIP.
Associate Professor Joshua Valeta, Director of Open Distance and E-learning at the Ministry of Education, welcomed the initiative, stating, "We are very excited because the project is bringing in power, which is a big challenge in most schools. This is a great development."
Valeta expressed confidence that the project will have a positive impact on the education sector, as it addresses key challenges and promotes sustainable practices in schools.
In addition to improving learning outcomes, the project aims to contribute to the development of environmentally-friendly practices in participating institutions.
