Soccer Experts Call for Long-Term Contract for Malawi Coach Pasuwa
Pasuwa's appointment by FAM's Technical Sub-committee awaits confirmation from the Executive Committee during this weekend's quarterly meeting.
BLANTYRE, Malawi — Soccer analysts urge the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to extend beyond its proposed one-year contract for newly appointed national team coach Kalisto Pasuwa, writes Joseph Chalera.
Soccer analyst Kevin Moyo questioned FAM's short-term approach, citing concerns about the impact on team development.
"FAM should come forward and tell Malawians their reasons for that," Moyo said.
Pasuwa's appointment by FAM's Technical Sub-committee awaits confirmation from the Executive Committee during this weekend's quarterly meeting.
The coach has demonstrated success in recent matches against Burkina Faso and Burundi.
Moyo emphasised the need for strategic planning, particularly with upcoming tournaments.
"Let FAM give him a long-term contract so that he can plan well for the tournaments ahead of us," he said.
The analyst expressed scepticism about Malawi's readiness for African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifications, suggesting that qualification would be "a miracle because we don't have a proper team."
FAM faces pressure to clarify its long-term vision for the national team, with critics arguing that a one-year contract could hinder the development of comprehensive strategies for competitions like AFCON 2027 and the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
