Six Lose Sight in Karonga After Using Traditional Eye Treatments
Health officials are urging the community to exercise caution and seek professional medical help to prevent further complications and vision loss.
KARONGA, Malawi – Six individuals in Karonga district have permanently lost their vision after using traditional treatments for Vibro conjunctivitis, a highly contagious bacterial eye infection, according to Karonga District Hospital officials, writes Wezzie Mwangonde.
Estery Nyirenda, the District's Health Promotion Officer, advised the public to seek medical attention immediately upon experiencing symptoms of Vibro conjunctivitis and to avoid using traditional remedies such as urine, chamwamba (a local herbal concoction), kachasu (a strong alcoholic beverage), hand sanitizer, and pepper.
"It is crucial to understand that these methods can cause significant harm and even permanent vision loss," Nyirenda emphasized.
Blessings Chile, an ophthalmologist at Karonga District Hospital, confirmed an increase in Vibro conjunctivitis complications due to the use of home remedies.
He specifically discouraged the use of hand sanitizer, highlighting the presence of harmful chemicals in these products.
"Additionally, using urine poses a significant health risk due to the potential presence of sexually transmitted infections, further jeopardizing eye health," explained Dr. Chile.
As of March 6, 2024, Karonga District has recorded 2,180 confirmed cases of Vibro conjunctivitis since the outbreak began in early February.
Health officials are urging the community to exercise caution and seek professional medical help to prevent further complications and vision loss.
