Silver Strikers regain top spot in TNM Super League log after a thrilling 2-1 win against Extreme FC at Civo Stadium.
Lilongwe, Malawi - Silver Strikers reclaimed the top position in the TNM Super League log after a thrilling 2-1 win over Extreme FC at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Wednesday, writes Happy Valirani.
The match was a closely contested battle, with both teams vying for three crucial points. Patrick Macheso of Silver Strikers opened the scoring in the 5th minute, giving his team an early advantage.
However, Extreme FC fought back, and Babakina Ishaya equalised the score in the 54th minute with a well-curved ball from Justice Chihonde.
Undeterred, Silver Strikers showed resilience and determination, and Chimwemwe Idana restored their lead in the 75th minute.
The Central Bankers held on to the 2-1 lead until the final whistle, securing a valuable victory.
Taonga Chimodzi, the assistant coach for Silver Strikers, praised his team's performance and acknowledged the momentary lapse in concentration during the second half.
"It was a good game, though, in the second half, we lost concentration, allowing the opponents to capitalise and score a goal. But we made some changes to strengthen our attack, and in the end, we won the game," said Chimodzi.
With this win, Silver Strikers now share the top spot in the TNM Super League log with Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, both having accumulated 28 points.
Wanderers occupy the second position, setting up an exciting title race in the coming matches.
Up next for Silver Strikers is a Lilongwe derby against Civil Service United on Sunday, a crucial match that could further solidify their position at the top.
On the other hand, Extreme FC finds themselves at the bottom of the log table with only 6 points from 14 games.
Elvis Kafoteka, the head coach for Extreme FC, accepted the defeat graciously and expressed optimism for the second round of the TNM Super League.
He acknowledged the need for improvement in the team's attacking prowess and vowed to come back stronger.
"We have lost, and we have accepted it. My boys played well, and we could have forced the game to a 1-1 draw, but unfortunately, we conceded the second goal. We need to go back and rectify our problems. Our chances are still there; we are not far from other teams in terms of points on the log table. We need to find five or six hungry strikers to bolster our frontline and come back stronger in the second round to secure our place in the Super League," said Kafoteka.
In another TNM Super League match on the same day, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers secured a 2-0 victory over Mafco FC.
Vitumbiko Kumwenda and Vincent Nyangulu were the heroes for the Wanderers, sealing the victory at Chitowe Stadium, where Mafco FC plays their home matches.
