Silver Strikers Outclass Civil Service United 2-0 in Capital City Derby
The win reinforces Silver Strikers' title ambitions as they seek to end an 11-year championship drought.
LILONGWE, Malawi — Silver Strikers claimed bragging rights in the capital city derby, defeating longtime rivals Civil Service United 2-0 in a TNM Super League match at Civo Stadium on Sunday, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
The league leaders broke the deadlock in the 48th minute through Innocent Shema, with Charles Chipala doubling the lead in the 66th minute.
Both goals came after halftime substitutions by Silver Strikers' head coach Peter Mponda, who introduced Chinsisi Maonga and Chipala for Atusaye Nyondo and Duncan Nyoni.
"We have had a nice game today against Civil as the boys understood the game plan," Mponda said.
"We wanted to break the link between their midfield and defense so that we should have a midfield battle which we won from the first whistle."
The victory solidifies Silver Strikers' position atop the league table with 29 points, eight clear of second-placed Wanderers, who defeated Mighty Tigers 2-1 at Kamuzu Stadium.
Mponda added, "Come second half, we knew that our opponents had used a lot of energy in the first half and come second half it was time kill off the game and it happened."
The win reinforces Silver Strikers' title ambitions as they seek to end an 11-year championship drought.
Meanwhile, Civil Service United supporters face another disappointing week following the derby loss to their arch-rivals.
The Reserve Bank-sponsored side's commanding performance and strategic substitutions proved decisive in securing the derby victory, leaving Civil Service United to regroup as the league progresses.
