BLANTYRE, Malawi— Silver Strikers widened their lead in the TNM Super League to seven points after a dramatic 1-0 victory over reigning champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets on Sunday at Kamuzu Stadium, writes Happy Valirani.
Substitute Chinsisi Maonga's 90th-minute goal secured the maximum points for Silver Strikers, taking their tally to 25 atop the league table, seven clear of second-placed Kamuzu Barracks.
Despite creating numerous scoring opportunities through Babatunde Adepoju, Bullets failed to capitalize.
Silver Strikers' goalkeeper George Chikooka made several crucial saves to keep a clean sheet.
The match was marred by a 15-minute stoppage in added time after angry supporters threw objects onto the pitch following Maonga's goal. Referee Gift Chiko ended the game prematurely, awarding Silver Strikers a 1-0 win.
"It wasn't an easy game," said Silver Strikers coach Peter Mponda. "We knew what we wanted, although the opposition were good on ball possession. I thank my players for fighting hard and winning."
