Silver Strikers Beat Mighty Wanderers 1-0 in Malawi Super League
Chimwemwe Idana scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute to give Silver Strikers the maximum three points.
LILONGWE, Malawi - Silver Strikers beat Mighty Wanderers 1-0 in a TNM Super League match at Bingu National Stadium on Monday, October 16, 2023, writes Happy Valirani.
Chimwemwe Idana scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute to give Silver Strikers the maximum three points.
The win cemented Silver Strikers' chances of remaining in the title race. They are fourth on the table with 43 points, four points behind leaders Mighty Wanderers, but with a game in hand.
Silver Strikers head coach Pieter De Jongh was happy with the victory, despite a slow start in the first half.
"We started at a very low pace in the first half," De Jongh said. "We only had one clear chance but we missed it. Come second half we tried to come back into the game. We created two chances and we scored a goal. A win today, that's a better result.
"The league is still open to everyone and we are still in the race. We take each game at a time and most importantly is three points, although it won't be easy because in football you win, you lose and you draw."
Mighty Wanderers coach Mark Harrison was disappointed with the result.
"We give away another silly goal same as previous game, with only few minutes to go," Harrison said. "Each and every game we are creating chances but we are failing to score. We created two clear chances today but we didn't utilize them.
"This is not time we need to drop points because the league is becoming tight, now we will be looking at other teams to drop points. A draw would have been a better result than losing all the three points."
In other TNM Super League games played on Monday, Chitipa United drew 2-2 with Blue Eagles at Karonga United while Civil Service United and Red Lions played to a goalless draw at Civo Stadium.
