Malawi: The Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change has warned the public that the country will experience a heatwave in the shire valley areas over the next five days.
Temperatures are expected to reach 40 to 42 degrees Celsius during this period, according to a statement from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change.
Heads of education institutions in the shire valley and surrounding areas are advised to take precautionary measures to protect teachers and students from the heatwave.
Chikondano Mussa, Secretary for Education, has advised teachers and students to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, to avoid direct sunlight, to dress in loose clothing that allows free flow of air, and to waive school timetables for both primary and secondary schools for the next four days.
Mussa also stated that these guidelines will be strictly enforced for the next four days.
The Secretary for Education said the school schedule and dress code will return to normalcy on Monday, October 31, 2022.
