Shire Valley Chiefs Back Mia for MCP Second Vice President
The MCP has not officially commented on the chiefs' endorsements or the upcoming election.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi— Senior chiefs in Malawi's Shire Valley districts are urging Malawi Congress Party (MCP) delegates to support Abida Sidik Mia for second vice president at next week's party convention, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Senior Chief Chimombo of Nsanje praised Mia's potential to attract votes from the region. '
"She can do everything possible in supporting the locals in the Shire Valley districts," Chimombo said.
Mia, the current Water and Sanitation Minister, has been recognized for her efforts in providing clean water nationwide.
Senior Chief Ngabu of Chikwawa highlighted Mia's development initiatives in her parliamentary constituency.
"From the potential we have noticed in her, she can ably deliver in the development of the party's work once ushered into the senior position," Ngabu said.
The chiefs cited various projects, including boreholes, clinics, and school blocks, as evidence of Mia's commitment to local development.
Sources within the MCP, speaking on condition of anonymity, suggest Mia may run unopposed for the second vice president position.
They describe her as "instrumental" in both the southern region and the country as a whole.
The MCP has not officially commented on the chiefs' endorsements or the upcoming election.
The party convention is scheduled for next week, with the date and location yet to be announced.
