BALAKA, Malawi - Farmers in Balaka have been urged to use certified seeds as a key strategy to combat food insecurity in the area, writes Peter Davieson.
The call was made on Saturday during the opening of a new Seed Co office in Liwonde township, where a variety of weather-resistant seeds were showcased.
Seed Co Managing Director Boyd Luwe explained that the new office is part of the company's 2025 strategic plan, which emphasizes increased customer interaction.
"We are trying to make sure that farmers can come and access genuine Seed Co seeds from genuine Seed Co outlets," he said.
Paramount Chief Kawinga, the guest of honor, praised the new office's convenience for farmers.
"Coming in of this new Seed Co office will give room for farmers to buy seeds without traveling a long distance," he said.
He also encouraged farmers to utilize the Shire River for irrigation, urging them to rely less on rainfall due to its unreliability.
Dalitso Chandire, the district's principal agriculture officer responsible for crops, advised farmers to choose crop varieties suited to the current season and resistant to drought.
