Security Houses Progress 'Satisfactory,' President Says
The defense force will receive 4,000 new homes, the police 4,000, the prison service 1,000 and the immigration department 1,000.
CHIKWAWA, Malawi - President Lazarus Chakwera said Tuesday he is satisfied with the progress of construction on 30 new houses for police officers at the Mitole Police Mobile Service camp in Chikwawa, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Speaking during an inspection tour of the site, Chakwera said the new homes will provide better living conditions than the "delapidated houses" currently housing officers at many stations.
"Officers deserve standard houses," the president said.
Chikwawa Central parliamentarian Salim Bagus, who had appealed for new police housing after Tropical Storm Gombe damaged the Mitole camp, thanked Chakwera for responding to the call.
"I made this call during the time of tropical storm Gombe and now it has been addressed," Bagus said.
Owen Chomanika, deputy local government minister and member of parliament for Chikwawa North, asked the president to schedule a full political rally in the district to allow for more community interaction.
"There is a need to have a full political rally in the district so that there can be fully interaction with the communities," Chomanika said.
The 30 houses under construction include six for senior officers and 24 for junior officers. They are part of a 10,000 home project launched by the government for security personnel across Malawi.
The defense force will receive 4,000 new homes, the police 4,000, the prison service 1,000 and the immigration department 1,000.
