School Maintenance Urged by Traditional Authority Kilipula in Karonga District
The ultimatum came during a meeting where the Ngerenge FP ALUMNI committee introduced itself to local leaders.
Karonga, Malawi - Senior Traditional Authority Kilipula in Karonga district has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the school management committee and the village headman surrounding Ngerenge Primary School to address the maintenance of deteriorating school buildings, writes Ellah Chirwa.
The ultimatum came during a meeting where the Ngerenge FP ALUMNI committee introduced itself to local leaders.
T/A Kilipula expressed his concern over the deteriorating condition of school buildings and called for swift action from the community and local leaders.
"Government has provided us with these structures, and it is our responsibility as a community to ensure their maintenance. We should not wait for the government to address every issue; we should take action when we see any deterioration in our public institutions," Kilipula emphasized.
The Chairperson of Ngerenge FP ALUMNI, Alex Mwangose, echoed T/A Kilipula's sentiments. He explained that the association was formed to address the challenges faced by Ngerenge School.
"Since 2011 when the school structures were damaged by an earthquake, we have faced numerous challenges. We are committed to maintaining the standard 3 block, which currently accommodates learners despite its condition. We have raised funds to purchase cement and other materials to create a conducive learning environment," Mwangose stated.
Mwangose emphasized that the association relies on individual contributions and called on Ngerenge ALUMNI to join their efforts and ensure quality education for local children.
The association also highlighted other challenges faced by the school, such as accommodating 728 learners with only four toilets, which poses a health risk to the children.
Future Plans for the Child Director, Amos Chindamba, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the association to support child protection efforts.
Ngerenge FP ALUMNI is comprised of individuals who completed their primary education at the school and now work in various institutions in Malawi and abroad.
