Sasai Money Transfer expands free remittances to more African markets
Sasai plans to extend the service to other high-traffic remittance Airtel markets, including Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya and Zambia.
JOHANNESBURG— Sasai Money Transfer, a business of Cassava Technologies, has partnered with Airtel Money to expand its free remittances offer to additional African markets, starting with Uganda, writes AfricaBrief Reporter.
The Zero Fees initiative, first launched in May 2024 with Econet in Zimbabwe, will eliminate remittance fees for users in the United Kingdom and South Africa sending money to Uganda.
Recipients can cash out funds for free from their Airtel Money wallet.
Darlington Mandivenga, Sasai Fintech CEO, said the partnership "offers an important avenue into one of Africa's largest remittance markets."
"As Sasai, this is where we want to be, ensuring we reach as many people as possible and ultimately leave no African behind," Mandivenga said.
The initiative aims to formalize remittances, addressing the prevalence of informal transfers that often exceed official channels in volume.
Japhet Aritho, managing director of Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited, said the partnership "aligns with our agenda of ensuring financial inclusivity for all Ugandans."
Sasai plans to extend the service to other high-traffic remittance Airtel markets, including Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Kenya and Zambia.
The company said its earlier partnership with EcoCash, Zimbabwe's largest mobile money operator, has been successful, describing it as an "indispensable lifeline" for families.
In an industry where fees can reach 13%, the zero fees initiative could significantly contribute to formalizing international money transfers, potentially shifting funds from unsafe informal channels to regulated services.
