Salima Urged to Plant Trees for Sustainability

SALIMA, Malawi— New Chigombe-Ecco Bricks, a company that provides concrete building blocks, youth empowerment services and environmental conservation training, has urged people in Salima to invest in planting trees to realize sustainable development and fight climate change, writes Alinafe Nyanda.
Speaking ahead of the district’s tree planting season launch on Friday, New Chigombe Ecco-Bricks Director Josephy Kandiyesa said planting trees benefits the environment and improves people's physical and mental health.
“Trees are vital to our existence because they provide us with oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere,” Kandiyesa said.
Kandiyesa said his company will spearhead environmental conservation efforts in the district to safeguard people's health and safety amid extreme weather events worsened by climate change, like droughts and flooding.
Salima District Council chairperson Chifundo Katoweka said the council is collaborating with stakeholders to launch a massive tree planting drive, calling on the community to plant many indigenous and exotic trees to conserve the environment and increase climate resilience.
Katoweka also urged residents to adopt tree planting not only at institutions like schools, offices and hospitals but also in their neighborhoods.
People from various sectors, including government officials, citizens and community leaders are expected to attend the launch.
