Salima council launches sanitation drive
This initiative, led by the council, seeks to educate the community on responsible waste disposal, with the ultimate goal of creating a cleaner and safer environment.
Salima, Malawi — The Salima District Council has initiated a comprehensive awareness campaign aimed at promoting improved sanitation and hygiene practises among residents, writes Peter Chilongo.
This initiative, led by the council, seeks to educate the community on responsible waste disposal, with the ultimate goal of creating a cleaner and safer environment.
The campaign was officially launched by Samuel Chimowa, the Environmental Officer of the Salima District Council.
Chimowa emphasized the multifaceted advantages of this endeavour, stating, "The primary objective of this campaign is to ensure that waste is properly disposed of in designated areas."
To facilitate this, the council plans to strategically place waste bins throughout the district. These bins will not only serve as convenient collection points but also serve as visual reminders for proper waste disposal practices.
Chimowa further underscored that the campaign's significance extends beyond aesthetics and cleanliness.
"The proper disposal of waste plays a crucial role in preventing floods caused by blockages in our drainage systems due to improper waste disposal," he added.
Blockages in drainage systems have been a recurring issue, negatively impacting both the environment and the lives of Salima's residents.
The campaign is also a response to the concerning rise in illegal waste disposal, which has led to the deterioration of the district's surroundings.
Chimowa noted, "Increased disposal of waste in illegal places is causing a state of disarray in our surroundings, compromising the well-being of our community."
To ensure the campaign's success, the Salima District Council intends to collaborate closely with the local business community.
Businesses will be encouraged to install waste bins on their premises to promote responsible waste management practises.
This collaborative approach is expected to benefit the environment and foster a sense of shared responsibility within the community.
Dalitso Gome, the Chairperson for the Salima Cleanup campaign, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative.
"Placing waste bins in strategic locations will provide people with a convenient and responsible way to dispose of their waste," Gome stated.
Currently, residents have limited options for waste disposal, making this move a significant step towards enhancing Salima's cleanliness.
Gome also stressed the importance of continuous awareness and sensitization campaigns within the community.
"To ensure long-term success, it is imperative to continue educating and engaging with our communities so that they align with the council's objectives," he emphasized.
The Salima District Council's commitment to improving sanitation and hygiene practises demonstrates its dedication to the well-being of its residents.
The campaign's multifaceted approach, including waste bin placement and collaboration with local businesses, promises a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for Salima.
As the campaign gains momentum, it is expected to inspire positive changes in waste disposal habits and set an example for other districts to follow.
