Rising Teenage Pregnancies and Unsafe Abortions Raise Concerns in Blantyre
SHealth Officials and Stakeholders Seek Solutions to Address the Alarming Trend
Blantyre, Malawi - The Blantyre District Health Office has expressed deep concern over the soaring number of teenage pregnancies and the resulting complications from unsafe abortions, writes Mayamiko Phiri.
Between the months of July and September this year, over 2,300 teenage pregnancies were recorded in Blantyre, leading to an alarming increase in unsafe abortions and maternal deaths.
During a stakeholders' engagement and networking meeting organized by the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) in collaboration with the Nyale Institute, the Safe Motherhood Coordinator for Blantyre DHO, Ellida Bvutula, highlighted the distressing situation.
Bvutula revealed that this year alone, 849 young girls and women required post-abortal care due to delivery and abortion-related complications.
The statistics are equally alarming in terms of maternal deaths.
According to Bvutula, Blantyre district has seen 31 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, while the national figure stands at 439 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.
Dennis Mwafulirwa, a program officer at CHRR, explained that the purpose of the meeting was to address the challenges faced by young girls and to explore potential solutions.
"We aim to build capacity among stakeholders and generate new ideas," Mwafulirwa stated.
The rising number of teenage pregnancies and the resulting unsafe abortions have become a pressing issue in Blantyre.
Health officials and stakeholders are now working together to find effective strategies to tackle this critical problem and ensure the well-being of young girls in the community.
