Rise Up Malawi empowers farmers through innovative agriculture
Local nonprofit RUM empowers needy Malawians with life-changing techniques.
MANGOCHI, Malawi — Rise Up Malawi (RUM), a local non-profit organisation, is on a mission to empower needy and vulnerable members of local communities through life-changing techniques that improve livelihoods, writes Hafsa Twaya.
Founded in 2018 by Megan Mathis and Hudson Mwale, RUM aims to bring positive change to the lives of those facing adversity.
Registered under the Trustees Incorporation Act and with the Council for Non-Governmental Organisations in Malawi (CONGOMA), RUM focuses its efforts on four core thematic areas: food security, health, education, and general livelihood support.
Recognising agriculture's critical role as the lifeline of Malawi's economy, RUM has taken a direct approach to tackling food insecurity by empowering smallholder farmers with innovative techniques and skills that enhance crop productivity and household food security.
In early 2019, RUM launched the Farming God's Way Programme, which began with the spring training session in April, followed by the fall training session in October, successfully rescuing over 50 smallholders from hunger in the process.
Mphatso Gasa, a resident of Maudzu Village, shared his remarkable journey of transformation thanks to the Farming God's Way Programme.
“I learned new farming skills that revolutionised my approach to agriculture,” said Gasa.
With the implementation of organic fertilisers and crop residue incorporation, his maize production skyrocketed, ensuring his family could enjoy three meals a day," Gasa proudly shared.
Another farmer, Samson Liston from John Sawati Village, echoed Gasa's sentiments, stating, "With improved crop productivity, meagre harvests blossomed into an abundant source of sustenance, securing an abundant harvest."
Liston credited the hands-on practical training provided by RUM for instilling him with confidence and expertise.
Mirriam Miluku, residing in Matuwi 2 Village, also experienced a life-changing impact by embracing the Farming God's Way techniques. "Rising from the shadows of poverty, I embraced the Farming God's Way techniques and experienced a bountiful harvest," said Miluku.
Her success story resonated with many, serving as a testament to RUM's efforts.
Encouraged by these powerful stories, Rise Up Malawi aspires to expand the Farming God's Way Program into remote farming communities, where daily activities revolve around agriculture.
"Our vision is to reach as many communities as possible, transforming lives and fostering hope," expressed a representative from RUM.
Despite facing financial challenges escalated by global trends such as the COVID-19 pandemic, which reduced external support, Rise Up Malawi remains steadfast in its dedication to promoting sustainable agriculture, improving food security, and fostering self-sufficiency.
"With each empowered farmer, we secure not only their meals but also their future. Together, we can create a Malawi where no one goes hungry," emphasised a representative from RUM.
Their commitment to cultivating hope and inspiring communities far and wide solidifies Rise Up Malawi as a beacon of inspiration.
