Rights group requests delay in police shooting payouts
Security expert Mater Mfune said CDEDI should engage in dialogue with the Attorney General to seek a lasting solution.
LILONGWE, Malawi - The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative has formally requested that the Attorney General withhold compensation payments to the families of two men allegedly shot by police in Salima last year pending further investigation, writes Memory Phoso.
Speaking at a Tuesday press conference in Lilongwe, CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa said delaying the payouts is important because there are witnesses who can provide insight into what actually happened in Thuma Forest.
"This issue is of utmost significance, especially in light of the security breakdown our nation is currently experiencing," Namiwa said.
"We believe that certain individuals may feel emboldened to take lives with impunity in our country."
Security expert Mater Mfune said CDEDI should engage in dialogue with the Attorney General to seek a lasting solution.
"It's commendable that they've written to the Attorney General, but they could have initiated a direct conversation with him to discuss the matter," Mfune said.
