MZUZU, Malawi — The Reserve Bank of Malawi organised a networking cocktail on Friday with journalists from the northern region who are members of the Nyika Media Club (NMC), writes Tionge Hara.
The event, held at the Mzuzu Sunbird Hotel, was aimed at fostering relationships between the bank and the media and discussing ways to improve the flow of financial information to the public.
Mark Lungu, the Director of Public Relations and Spokesperson for the Reserve Bank of Malawi, emphasised the importance of patience when waiting for information from the bank.
Lungu also acknowledged the value of collaboration between the media and the corporate world, highlighting the benefits that arise from working hand in hand.
Joseph Mwale, Chairperson of the Nyika Media Club, expressed concerns about the challenges faced by the media due to strict deadlines.
Mwale stated that incomplete stories often result from the time constraints imposed by newspapers, radio stations, and other media houses.
Mwale also emphasised the importance of media access to information, as it is a crucial element in delivering accurate and comprehensive news to the public.
Both parties acknowledged the significance of the interaction and agreed to collaborate closely in providing necessary financial information to the public.
The engagement between the Reserve Bank of Malawi and the Nyika Media Club sets the stage for a strengthened partnership in sharing accurate and timely financial updates with the public.
It would seem also a lack of initiative on the part of media groups needs to be addressed also. Financial data is available but not used e.g. inflows of forex, kwacha movements, etc.
Important points on time of availibility to meet deadlines and detail of release to allow analysis which is more than reporting.
If time is to near a print deadline the article is held til the next available time. Print media can become dated compared to on line.
Data detail is important also.
Both points contribute to a higher quality of media and news production.
