Relief Maize Distribution Ongoing in Hard-Hit Nsanje Despite Delays
Despite the logistical challenges of the relief effort, authorities vowed no community would be left behind as Malawi continues recovering from Cyclone Freddy's widespread destruction.
NSANJE, Malawi— The delivery of relief maize to hard-to-reach areas in Nsanje Central Constituency has faced delays, but distribution is now underway for communities impacted by Tropical Cyclone Freddy, according to the area's parliamentarian, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Kafandikhale Mandevana, MP for Nsanje Central, said Wednesday that while nearly 5,000 people from five group village headmen areas have received maize from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), villages like Alindiamawo, Kawa and Nyantchiri are still awaiting their allocation.
"The communities in the hard-to-reach areas will receive their portion soon," Mandevana assured during the distribution exercise at Chigumukire Primary School grounds.
The legislator commended President Lazarus Chakwera for his "tireless support" to cyclone-affected populations. Chakwera had declared a state of national disaster following the tropical cyclone's devastating impacts.
Group Village Headman Nyamula expressed gratitude for the relief, stating it "has come at the right time" as people harvested little to no crops due to drought.
"What we have received today will take the locals some time," Nyamula said of the maize distribution.
One beneficiary, Zione Mwendowambuzi, said she did not harvest anything this season because of prolonged dry spells, underscoring her appreciation for the government's intervention.
