Relief Group Provides Plastic Sheeting to Flood Victims in Malawi
The donation aims to provide temporary shelter for families left homeless in Ndamera as humanitarian groups continue relief efforts across the disaster zone.
NSANJE, Malawi— The Shire Valley Transformation Movement has donated plastic sheeting worth K1.6 million to 106 households displaced by severe flooding in southern Malawi's Nsanje district, writes Cornelius Lupenga.
Programs and Administrative Officer Nelson Dinyero said Saturday the non-profit decided to assist communities in the area of Traditional Authority Ndamera because "all waters from upper lands ends up here."
One beneficiary, Alinafe Meke, said she lost her house and numerous belongings to Cyclone Freddy.
The plastic sheeting measuring 32 feet (10 meters) "is going to assist me greatly and I am going to have shelter," she told AfricaBrief.
Large areas of southern Malawi experienced destructive flooding in March from the cyclone's heavy rains.
The Shire Valley, comprising the districts of Chikwawa and Nsanje, was among the hardest hit.

Thousands of people remain displaced weeks after the record-shattering storm.
