NKHOTAKOTA, Malawi - The Office of Disaster Management Affairs in Nkhotakota reports that over 5,000 individuals and 1,000 families have been affected by severe flooding, writes Fletcher Chiponda.
George Zibophe, acting disaster management officer, highlighted the dire situation during an interview.
"For the past three days, areas in Nkhotakota have experienced widespread flooding, especially in Kaombe, Bua, Ngalatete, and Dwangwa. Properties, food, and utensils have been mercilessly swept away by the floods," Zibophe said.
Despite the emergency, Zibophe assured that the council is mobilizing all available resources to assist the impacted communities.
"The council is working tirelessly to deploy search and rescue teams to the affected areas," he stated.
"As a district, we urgently require a comprehensive search and rescue operation to evacuate people to safer grounds. Additionally, we need to provide essential everyday necessities like shelter and clean water to ensure the well-being of those affected.”
Their top priority is guaranteeing the safety of those stranded and mitigating further risks.
