Rains Bring Relief, Ruin in Malawi
Relief items distributed include maize, beans, blankets, pails and plastic sheets.
LILONGWE, Malawi - Seasonal rains have brought both relief and ruin across Malawi, according to a statement from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), writes Winston Mwale.
Through a statement, the DoDMA reports that storms, strong winds and lightning have affected 14 districts since October, impacting 4,751 households or about 21,379 people.
Five deaths and 46 injuries have been attributed to the severe weather.
"The department has reached out to 3,829 households, approximately 17,230 people and representing 81 percent of the total number affected, with food and non-food items," said DoDMA Commissioner Charles Kalemba.
Relief items distributed include maize, beans, blankets, pails and plastic sheets.
Kalemba said DoDMA is collaborating with humanitarian partners to ensure all impacted households receive aid.
With the rainy season underway, Kalemba advised Malawians to plant trees around their homes to act as wind buffers.
He also urged people to pay attention to weather forecasts and seek enclosed shelter during thunderstorms.
"Avoid seeking shelter under trees when thunderstorms strike," Kalemba said.
