DEDZA, Malawi— World Vision Malawi and Health-Wise have organized a quiz competition between primary schools in Dedza district, aiming to improve educational standards in the area, writes Edward Chikwanda.
The competition, involving 16 primary schools in Senior Chief Tambala's area, saw an investment of K7.5 million from the organizers.
World Vision District Program Manager Chikumbutso Kamwendo said Tuesday that the competition is motivating students to study harder and has increased enrollment.
"Our aim is to help the government in improving education standards," Kamwendo said.
"We've seen a great improvement in enrollment among students."
The initiative was developed in response to high dropout rates in the area. Kamwendo added that children with disabilities and those marginalized are included through a project called "Able to Thrive."
Tendai Chidzero, Executive Director of Health-Wise, said the "Maphunziro Mbambande" program has improved literacy levels and equipped students with time management skills.
"Through such competitions, teachers are able to assess subjects and find gaps among students," Chidzero told Africa Brief.
Bernard Kumanda, an official from the Education Division, praised the program for developing listening skills among students.
He also thanked World Vision for constructing teacher housing and school blocks, which he said contributes to better educational standards in the district.
