Professionals Urged: Embrace Integrity, Serve Malawi's Poor
Ngwira was reacting to the question on the role of professionals amidst economic challenges the country is facing.
LILONGWE, Malawi- Professionals in the country have been challenged to embrace high levels of integrity in order to serve poor Malawians, writes Howard Mlozi.
This was said by the Chancellor of Pentecostal Life University (PLU) professor Kingstone Ngwira recently during the University's eighth congregation held at Bingu International Convention Centre (Bicc) in Lilongwe in November, 2023.
"Malawi needs problem-solvers and professionals with high integrity who can be entrusted to serve," said Ngwira.
Ngwira was reacting to the question on the role of professionals amidst economic challenges the country is facing.
"Graduating with different certificates is one thing and serving the country is another. At the level Malawi is it needs professionals with high integrity to serve," he said.
As a University we have seen over 400 students graduating in different fields of study. But what is most important is not the graduation itself but the quality of professionals that we want in the job industry.
Malawi needs problem-solvers and professionals with high integrity who can be entrusted to serve," said Ngwira.
Currently, Malawi is facing challenges ranging from corruption and deepening poverty levels due to high cost of living.
Ngwira said it was bad for a struggling economy like Malawi to have professionals who perpetrate corruption at the expense of suffering Malawians.
"Imagine, having professionals who abuse public resources while the majority poor are suffering? This is not what we want. It is important to have patriotic professionals with integrity in order to improve the living conditions of poor Malawians," he said.
Professor Ngwira also urged academic institutions to ensure that their students are rooted in integrity and professionalism.
"The essence of study should be preparing students to become good professionals who can contribute to the socioeconomic development of this country. Not necessarily aiding the country to deeper problems due to lack of discipline and welfare of the people at heart," said Ngwira.
One of the graduates Chigomezgo said Malawi needs professionals who are committed to change.
"Social change is all what we want to see in the country. If all professionals can work towards achieving this goal there will be less suffering among the majority poor," he said.
