Primary School Exams Successful Despite Minor Incidents
The ministry praised the cooperation from security agencies, parents and guardians in ensuring a disciplined examination process.
LILONGWE, Malawi— Malawi's Primary School Leaving Certificate exams wrapped up successfully on Friday despite a few minor incidents, according to the Ministry of Education, writes Moses Chilumpha.
"The ministry is very excited that the three days has been a great success," said ministry spokesperson Mphatso Nkuonera.
He said around 99% of students took the exams compared to last year when some teachers mishandled fees, preventing some from testing.
Nkuonera cited two issues that were resolved — unknown people spread buffalo beans at an exam center in Mulanje, and in Chiradzulu a female teacher mishandled candidate fees before the problem was fixed.
A small percentage of girls who became pregnant chose not to take the opportunity to write the exams, she said.
The ministry praised the cooperation from security agencies, parents and guardians in ensuring a disciplined examination process.
Nkuonera urged electronic payment methods to prevent fee handling issues.
Police spokesperson Limbani Mpinganjira in Mchinji agreed it was a smooth process with no serious irregularities, crediting coordination between police, the military and education officials.
At Zulu Primary School in Lilongwe, headmaster Witness Jangiya expressed satisfaction with the well-behaved candidates and partner organizations providing security.
The Malawi National Examinations Board will now administer Junior Certificate and Malawi School Certificate exams over the next two months.
