President Offers Aid After Fatal Mzuzu House Collapse
Chakwera pledged K2 million to assist with funeral expenses, while the area's member of parliament Bennex Mwamlima contributed K300,000.
MZUZU, Malawi - A devastating house collapse that claimed four lives in Masasa Township has drawn a response from President Lazarus Chakwera, who extended condolences and financial support to the grieving family, writes Tionge Hara.
The tragedy struck during heavy rains early Saturday, killing parents Ivy Banda and Rabison Malindi along with their two children Alisha and Frighton. Two other children survived as they were away attending overnight prayers.
Chakwera pledged K2 million to assist with funeral expenses, while the area's member of parliament Bennex Mwamlima contributed K300,000.
As the Mzuzu community reels from the heart-wrenching loss, questions have arisen about housing safety standards and disaster preparedness in the township.
"A family of six lost four members - the mom, dad, a 7-year-old girl and another one aged 16," confirmed Precious Mandala, a disaster risk management officer working closely with local leaders and the bereaved relatives.
Mandala said the council is providing transportation and logistical support, including fuel and a vehicle to transport the remains to the family's home village for burial rites.
