President Mourns Passing of JZU, Pillar in Malawian Politics

LILONGWE, Malawi - President Lazarus Chakwera expressed deep sadness over the passing of John Zenus Ungapake Tembo, describing him as a prominent figure in the history of Malawian politics, writes Vincent Gunde.
Chakwera praised JZU's extensive experience as a cabinet member, highlighting his role as the first Malawian Minister of Finance and Governor of the Reserve Bank.
In a statement, President Chakwera emphasised JZU's unwavering commitment to the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and his instrumental role in facilitating a democratic transfer of power within the party in 2013.
The President stated that JZU's contributions would forever be etched in the nation's political history, describing his legacy as one of resilience and dedication.
"Malawians will remember JZU not only as a political stalwart but also as a source of inspiration and a repository of knowledge," President Chakwera wrote in his eulogy.
He extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, the MCP, and all Malawians during this difficult time.
"We have lost a true statesman, and his legacy will forever remain in our hearts. May his soul rest in eternal peace," he concluded.
Members of the MCP diaspora also joined in mourning the late Hon. JZU, praising his leadership and wisdom.
They acknowledged his pivotal role in steering the party during its time in opposition.
"JZU has been a symbol of loyalty and dedication, dedicating his life to serving others and serving Malawi," said the eulogy from the MCP diaspora wing.
Kondwani Nankhumwa, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, hailed JZU's dedication and service to the nation.
He stated that his legacy would be remembered by future generations and expressed his thoughts and prayers for the family during this difficult time.
Social media influencer Joshua Chisa Mbele also paid tribute to JZU, likening his instrumental role in public service administration to that of Ngwazi Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda's administration.
Mbele highlighted JZU's competence in various public institutions, including his roles as Chairman of ADMARC, Finance Minister, Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, and Minister of State.
