President Chakwera Presides Over Swearing-In of Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) Commissioners

LILONGWE, Malawi — In a solemn ceremony held at Kamuzu Palace, President Lazarus Chakwera presided over the swearing-in of nine Commissioners of the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), writes Esther Banda.
These Commissioners, appointed on September 14th, 2023, took their oath of office in a demonstration of their commitment to upholding human rights in the nation.
Addressing the newly appointed Commissioners, President Chakwera emphasized the importance of vigilance and unwavering dedication to their vital work.
He acknowledged the existence of challenging circumstances that often make their mission difficult.
President Chakwera stated, "There are always challenging forces that are determined to profit from the evil of human rights violations, twisted individuals that enjoy and find pleasure in treating others without dignity."
He further urged the Commissioners not to relent in their efforts, emphasizing the significant progress that has been made in the field of human rights.
President Chakwera encouraged them to safeguard these achievements and ensure that they do not regress under their watch.
"The Malawi Human Rights Commission has a history of being respected around the world and maintaining a very high grade in its performance at multilateral institutions, and you must not allow that standing to suffer relegation," President Chakwera declared.
The Minister of Justice, Titus Mvalo, reminded the Commissioners that their oath bound them to uphold the law of the country and to actively promote and protect human rights.
He expressed the Ministry's expectations for the Commissioners to maintain their exemplary record and work diligently.
Commissioner Chikondi Chijozi, representing the cohort of nine, emphasized their commitment to promoting human rights for all without discrimination.
She outlined their role in educating the public on their responsibilities during election-related demonstrations.
"The cohort now also looks at issues of freedom of association, freedom of expression, and we believe that people have the right to demonstrate. So as a commission, we will do our part in terms of Civic Education on their responsibilities when demonstrating," Commissioner Chijozi explained.
The nine appointed Commissioners include Mr. Viwemi Chavula, Mrs. Teresa Chirwa-Ndanga, Mr. Andrew Kavala, Mr. Bonface Massah, Dr. Sunduzwayo Madise, Ms. Scader Louis, Ms. Chikondi Chijozi, the Law Commissioner, and the Ombudsman.
This swearing-in ceremony marks a significant step in upholding and protecting human rights in Malawi, as the new Commissioners embark on their mission to ensure justice, equality, and dignity for all citizens.
