President Chakwera Pays Tribute to Late John Tembo as a Statesman of All Times
His final resting place will be in his hometown of Dedza, where he will be laid to rest on October 4, 2023.
Lilongwe, Malawi — President Lazarus Chakwera delivered a heartfelt eulogy at the funeral ceremony of late John Tembo, describing him as a statesman whose influence spanned through colonial, independence, and multiparty eras, making him an icon in Malawi's political history, writes Kumbukani Kondowe, MANA.
In his remarks, President Chakwera praised Tembo's enduring legacy, stating, "Today, we gather here to salute and bid farewell to a great man, a great statesman whose life has spanned nine decades and who occupied a front-row seat in the journey of Malawian politics."
President Chakwera emphasized that Tembo's life would forever serve as a library and archive for generations to come, highlighting his pivotal role in laying the foundation for democracy in the country.
"Late Tembo's contribution to Malawi's development and politics is immeasurable. He was a dedicated man of principles who remained steadfast with his party, even when others changed allegiances and joined different political entities," Chakwera added.
Former President Dr. Joyce Banda also paid tribute to Tembo, describing him as a leader with a deep love for people from all walks of life and a friend to everyone.
She commended his ability to build, train, and empower leaders, many of whom continue to serve Malawi long after his retirement.
In a touching tribute, John Tembo Junior, the late leader's son, reflected on the values instilled in him and his siblings by their father.
He spoke of Tembo as a mentor, leader, and disciplinarian who emphasized respect and moral values.
John Zenus Ungapake Tembo was born on September 14, 1932, and embarked on an educational journey that led him to various primary schools before attending Blantyre Secondary School.
Later, he pursued higher education at the University of Roma (also known as Pius XII College) in Lesotho, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political philosophy.
Tembo's political career began when he was elected to the legislative assembly of Nyasaland in 1961.
Following independence, he served as the Deputy Minister of Finance in Malawi, succeeding Henry Phillips. Tembo also held the position of Malawi Congress Party President until his retirement in 2013.
On September 26, 2023, at the age of 91, John Tembo passed away, leaving behind a profound legacy.
