President Chakwera Launches 2023 Poppy Appeal Week
The Poppy Appeal Week, established in 1918 following the end of World War I, is held at 11:00 AM Malawian time.
LILONGWE, Malawi — President Lazarus Chakwera, Commander-In-Chief of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), inaugurated the 2023 Poppy Appeal Week on Friday by purchasing a flag for MK2 million at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, writes Esther Banda.
Chakwera emphasised that Poppy Appeal Week aims to raise awareness and rekindle citizens' commitment to support war veterans and ex-servicemen, who played a crucial role in securing the peace enjoyed by the nation today.
He praised the veterans for contributing to the Malawi Defence Force's reputation as a disciplined and patriotic institution, stating, "those who have retired after wearing the uniform with valour and honour deserve our fondest memory, our highest regard, and our noblest service."
General Henry Odillo Retired, the Chairperson of the Veterans and Ex-Service League of Malawi (VELOM), expressed gratitude to President Chakwera for the government's support.
He explained that Velom supports war veterans, both pre- and post-independence, for their welfare.
The organization aims to raise MK100 million to renovate war veterans' houses at the War Memorial Home in Zomba. Odillo outlined plans to improve the toilets, shower rooms, water systems, and general maintenance of these ageing houses.
Furthermore, Odillo highlighted the need to address various challenges faced by war veterans and expressed the organization's intention to collaborate with private organisations, banks, and institutions willing to provide financial support.
Private Ibrahim Jali, a war veteran, urged Malawians to stand together and support Poppy Appeal Week.
The funds raised during this period will assist in addressing challenges such as accommodation and water supply.
Jali also advised those in the defence fraternity and those aspiring to join to remain focused on protecting the country. He emphasised that their duty is to defeat the nation's enemies.
The 2023 Poppy Appeal Week precedes Remembrance Day and is observed on the second Sunday of November each year. In 2023, it will take place on November 12th.
