President Chakwera honors 12 social entrepreneurs for their work in Malawi
LILONGWE, Malawi-President Lazarus Chakwera has bestowed the Presidential Zikomo Awards upon 12 exceptional social entrepreneurs who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to serve their communities through their leading social enterprises, writes Esther Banda.
The award ceremony took place at Kamuzu Palace on July 14, 2023.
Chakwera praised the awardees for their remarkable commitment to finding sustainable solutions to address the social challenges faced by Malawi.
He emphasised the admirable nature of social enterprises, which strive to build self-reliance and reduce the culture of dependence associated with other forms of intervention.
"Social enterprises are driven by individuals who genuinely want to fix Malawi's problems for the benefit of all," stated Chakwera.
Jean Sendeza, the Minister of Gender, Community Development, and Social Welfare, extended her congratulations to the recipients and urged them to continue their collective contributions to the country's economic growth and development.
She also encouraged them to promote the spirit of self-reliance within their communities.
Among the awardees is Napoleon Dzombe, a well-known Malawian entrepreneur and philanthropist who has founded five social enterprises. Dzombe's exceptional achievements in various social initiatives have earned him this recognition.
In an interview with AfricaBrief, Dzombe expressed his speechlessness and excitement, as he never anticipated such an honour.
He further encouraged all Malawians to come together and work towards the development of the country's economy and the improvement of people's livelihoods.
"It is advisable for all Malawians to unite and collaborate in order to develop our country's economy and enhance the well-being of our people," said Dzombe.
The social enterprises founded by Napoleon Dzombe, including Mtendere Orphan Village, the School of Agriculture for Family Independence, Ntalimanja Holdings, Blessings Hospital, and Madalitso Food Plant, have made a significant impact in addressing social challenges and improving the lives of many Malawians.
The Presidential Zikomo Awards serve as a testament to the government's recognition and appreciation of the invaluable contributions made by social entrepreneurs in driving positive change and sustainable development in Malawi.
