Police Ramp Up Road Safety for Easter
"The station will also use community radios to reach a wide audience to make sure that road accidents are prevented during Easter Holiday."
BALAKA, Malawi — Balaka Police Station says it is ramping up efforts to prevent road accidents during the upcoming Easter holiday period, writes Gladson M'bumpha.
In an interview, Station Traffic Officer Inspector Brenda Khofi said the traffic department will conduct day and night patrols in all accident-prone areas and trading centers, carry out sensitization campaigns targeting motorists and pedal cyclists, intensify checks on unroadworthy vehicles, and utilize speed cameras.
"The traffic department will sensitize the masses with a special focus on vulnerable groups like pedestrians, pedal cyclists and motorcyclists," Khofi said.
"The station will also use community radios to reach a wide audience to make sure that road accidents are prevented during Easter Holiday."
Officer In-charge Senior Superintendent Dan Sauteni said to combat crime during Easter, the station will deploy both uniformed and undercover officers in crime-prone areas in addition to round-the-clock patrols.
"The aim is to ensure the district is accident-free over Easter and that no criminal cases are registered," Sauteni said.
The holidays typically see an influx of travelers on Malawi's roads. Police say the heightened patrols, checkpoints and public awareness efforts are meant to curb reckless driving, unlicensed operators and vehicle defects that could lead to crashes.
