Police Officer Sentenced to 24 Months in Prison for Possession of Stolen Property in Nsanje

Sub-Inspector Richard Mpomba received goats on March 29th of last year that were suspected to have been stolen from boys, in violation of Section 328 of the penal code.

Malawi: A police officer in Nsanje has been found guilty and sentenced to 24 months in prison with hard labour for possession of stolen property in the district, writes Cornelius Lupenga.

According to prosecutor Sub-Inspector Victor Nachuma, Sub-Inspector Richard Mpomba received goats on March 29th of last year that were suspected to have been stolen from boys, in violation of Section 328 of the penal code.

The prosecutor argued for a harsher sentence, stating that the officer committed the crime intentionally. Mpomba pleaded for leniency, claiming that this was his first offense and that his family depends on him.

The judge, First Grade Magistrate Watson Mankhanamba, agreed with the prosecution and handed down the 24-month prison sentence with hard labour, to be effective from the day of Mpomba's arrest.

He is a resident of Mwendonthengo Village in the area of Senior Chief Tengani in Nsanje.
