Police Commissioners Inspect Newly-Constructed Police Structure in Malomo, Ntchisi
Commissioners tour Malomo location to assess the nearing completion of a community-funded Police Unit, improving officer working conditions.
NTCHISI, MALAWI — Commissioners Rhoda Manjolo and Babra Mchenga Tsiga visited the soon-to-be-operational Police Unit in Malomo, Ntchisi, on Tuesday, writes Esther Mkwanda, Police Public Relations Officer for the Central East Region.
The project, funded by the community, is in its final stages of construction.
Manjolo, responsible for the Central East Region, praised the community, specifically the Area Development Committee (ADC), for their efforts in creating a suitable working environment for the police officers.
She emphasised the importance of dialogue in resolving misunderstandings.
Having inspected the dilapidated Mkaika PMS camp earlier in the day, Manjolo expressed relief in seeing the significant progress made in constructing the police structure in Malomo.
She highlighted the challenges faced by the region, including inadequate offices, housing, and mobility.
Echoing Manjolo's sentiments, Tsiga urged the community not to repeat the 2019 incident when a police structure was torched, causing insecurity.
She assured the community that she would relay the concerns to the Inspector General of Police for appropriate action.
Andrew Kachande, Chairperson of the Malomo Area Development Committee, emphasised the community's understanding of the value of security in development, affirming their commitment to never repeat the mistakes of the past.
The newly-constructed police unit will enable officers to operate in a suitable space.
Since 2019, the Malomo Police Unit has operated from the bus depot, lacking office space and housing for its officers.
With the completion of the community-funded project, the unit is expected to provide improved working conditions for the officers.
